Robert Old's Cashmere knitwear is designed and produced in the Borders of Scotland using the skills and methods established over many generations.
Cashmere is procured from the fleece of the Cashmere Goat that inhabits the plateaus of Inner Mongolia. The winters are incredibly harsh in that part of the world with temperatures down as low as -40C degrees, and in these demanding conditions the Cashmere Goat grows a dense layer of fleece that it has no need of by the Spring. Rather than letting them moult naturally, the herdsman and their families coomb them and the trail of Robert Old's Cashmere begins.
At several points on the journey to Scotland the fibres are graded into different lengths and thicknesses, and yet again this selection process continues while the fibres are graded into colours, brown, grey and white. These stages are critical in sorting the quality most appropriate to making a superb sweater. Only the finest fibres will do and the most appropriate colour will only be used in the dying process.
The raw fibres eventually reach the expert hands of the Scottish Borderers where their traditional expertise allied with today's technology is harnessed in finally selecting the qualities suitable for dyeing, spinning and, of course, eventually knitting into your Robert Old sweater.
