Tailoring FAQ's
Exploring this topic initially may seem overwhelming, but we're here to support you at every turn. It's wise to start by asking a few simple questions before firming up your ideas. Consider elements like the time of year, geographical location, and the specific setting. Envision how you want the event to unfold, and from there, we can efficiently narrow down a selection of promising ideas.
Our makers pages explain typical prices to expect .
For every garment, whether made-to-measure or purchased at full price off the rack, we offer complimentary tailoring to ensure the perfect fit for your shape and size. Your sales consultant will expertly guide you through the fitting process, identifying areas for improvement such as adjusting sleeve lengths or tapering jacket waists. Rest assured, all our tailoring is carried out by qualified master tailors, providing you with peace of mind that your garment is in experienced hands.
For a made-to-measure suit or jacket, the average production time typically spans six weeks. However, for those preparing for a special occasion, we highly recommend allowing a generous three-month timeframe.
Given the high demand, Edward and Samuel Old are frequently occupied. Therefore, it's advantageous to book an appointment in advance for a comprehensive made-to-measure service. For a suit or jacket, we recommend allowing a minimum of one hour.
At Robert Old, we take pride in our comprehensive aftercare service. If you find yourself unable to wear your Robert Old garment due to changes in your shape or if it needs modernising, our highly experienced tailors are on hand to provide the necessary adjustments to the highest standards. Please note that this service is chargeable. For advice or to schedule alterations, please contact us in advance.
The term bespoke is historically a descriptive term to speak for something, or “to give order for it to be made” with the implied meaning that the cloth has been spoken for or selected by the client for their tailor to use.
Bespoke tailoring these days is a misinterpreted term which high street stores and many other shops misuse to explain their service. A true bespoke tailoring experience is a very long process which includes several fittings over 2-5 months, the tailor that you would generally meet is involved in the entire process from measurement and cloth selection right the way through to constructing and finishing the garment themselves. As you can imagine, this is a vastly expensive process and not particularly efficient if you require a garment quickly.
Here at Robert Old, we have specialised in what we call Made-to-Measure for decades, others describe it as semi-bespoke. What does ‘Made-to-Measure’ mean simply put, we will use a stock size garment as a template to measure from, to which we are able to make changes to fit your shape. These measurements are then sent to the chosen tailoring house where they will produce your garment from scratch to your custom specifications.
Similar to many manufacturing businesses in Italy, our tailoring suppliers observe their summer holidays throughout August, affecting our made-to-measure services. If you need anything for August or September, please reach out to our tailoring team promptly to discuss your needs. Remember, we require a minimum of six clear weeks to produce a suit or jacket, so plan ahead to avoid disappointment.
