Taxes & Duties – What You Need to Know
At Robert Old, we’re committed to providing a simple yet professional shopping experience. To support this, we’ve introduced a straightforward taxes and duties tool at checkout — giving you a clear view of the total cost when shipping internationally.
You’ll be presented with two options when selecting your shipping method:
- DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): Taxes and duties are calculated at checkout and handled by us on your behalf.
- DAP (Delivered at Place): You pay any applicable fees directly to DHL prior to delivery.
1. Delivered Duty Paid (DDP)
Pay all applicable taxes, VAT, and duties upfront at
checkout.
Choose from shipping services:
- Standard DHL (DDP – Taxes & Duties Paid)
- DHL Express (DDP – Taxes & Duties Paid)
Benefits of DDP:
- Taxes and duties are automatically calculated at checkout
- You pay once, with no surprise fees upon delivery
- Faster, smoother delivery process via DHL
Why choose DDP?
It’s the most transparent and hassle-free way to shop — you know exactly what you're paying from the start.
2. Delivered at Place (DAP)
Prefer to pay taxes and duties upon delivery?
Select:
- DHL International (DAP – Duties & Taxes Unpaid)
With DAP, you defer tax and duty payments until your package is shipped and with DHL. DHL will contact you before delivery to collect any required fees.

Returning a DDP Order
If you would like to return an order that was originally shipped via DDP – Duties & Taxes Paid, we strongly recommend requesting a return label from us by emailing store@old.co.uk.
This allows us to manage the return correctly and helps ensure the parcel is returned to Robert Old smoothly, without unnecessary customs delays or charges.
If you choose to arrange your own return shipping, Robert Old cannot be held liable for any inbound duties, taxes, customs charges, carrier fees or handling costs applied when the parcel re-enters the UK. Any such costs incurred may be deducted from your refund.
Can I receive a refund for taxes and duties on a DDP order?
Robert Old does not refund taxes or duties paid on DDP orders. These charges form part of the total shipping cost paid at checkout and are used to clear the goods for import. They are paid to DHL and/or the relevant customs authority and are not retained by Robert Old.
Where applicable, we can review each case and investigate whether a reclaim may be possible through DHL or the relevant customs authority. Any reclaim is subject to the rules of the destination country, DHL’s procedures, and customs approval. Robert Old cannot guarantee that any duties, taxes, customs fees, or
carrier charges will be recoverable.
2. Delivered at Place (DAP)
With DAP, taxes and duties are not paid at checkout. Your order will be shipped with duties and taxes unpaid, and DHL will contact you before delivery to collect any applicable import charges.
Select shipping service:
Option 2: DHL International – DAP, Duties & Taxes Unpaid
These charges are the customer’s responsibility and may include:
- Local VAT or sales tax
- Import duties
- Customs clearance or handling fees
- DHL administration, service or brokerage fees
Robert Old does not control these charges. They are set by the destination country’s customs authority and/or the carrier. The amount due may vary depending on your shipping destination, order value, product type and local import rules.
Once a DAP order has been dispatched, the customer is responsible for accepting delivery and paying any charges required to release the parcel.
If these charges are not paid, or if the parcel is refused, abandoned or returned to us, any costs incurred may be deducted from your refund. These may include outbound shipping, return shipping, carrier fees, customs handling fees and any other charges applied during the return process.
Returning a DAP Order
If you would like to return an order that was originally shipped via DAP – Duties & Taxes Unpaid, we strongly recommend requesting a return label from us by emailing store@old.co.uk.
Can I receive a refund for taxes and duties on a DAP order?
Robert Old cannot recoup any DAP taxes or duties paid by the customer, nor can we act on the customer’s behalf to recover these charges from the customs authority. In most cases, the local customs authority will only communicate with, or accept claims from, the importer of record — usually the customer. While in most cases claiming a refund from your local customs authority is possible, it is not always the case in every country.
For the simplest experience, we recommend choosing DDP – Delivered Duty Paid at checkout.
DAP - Unpaid Taxes & Duties / Cancellation Policy
If your order was placed using the DAP (Delivery at Place) system, once the order has been dispatched, it becomes the customer’s responsibility to:
- Accept the delivery
- Pay any applicable charges, including:
- Local VAT
- Import duties
- Service or brokerage fees (e.g., from DHL)
If these charges are not paid or delivery is refused, the package will be returned to us by the shipping carrier. This may result in additional costs, including:
- Outbound and return shipping
- Carrier service fees
- Customs handling charges
These costs will be deducted from your refund, and only the remaining balance will be issued once the return has been processed. Please note that invoicing and processing timelines can vary, especially for international shipments. A full breakdown of charges can be provided upon request.
