London covered in snow

How to choose the right coat for this winter

Posted by Robert Old on

Early indications are that we’re looking at a winter of variable but generally low temperature this year, with the chance of extreme cold. In Britain we’re used to expecting the unexpected, but an arctic blast is a rarity that can make it necessary to delve into the very back of the wardrobe to locate your less stylish but better insulated outerwear. We suggest that doesn’t have to be the case - you can have style and warmth in one, with technical fabrics offering elegant solutions to snow, wind and rain. Proper preparation will stand you in good stead, so let us take you through some of this season’s options.

Padded coats are the key

The phrase “padded coat” tends to conjure a certain vision - usually of a utilitarian quilted jacket which sacrifices form for function. Our high-end options from MooRER and Paul & Shark prove this not to be the case - we’ve chosen some highlights below, but you can browse our entire range of coats and jackets here.

Paul & Shark - Black Typhoon Save the Sea 4x4 Stretch Down Padded Jacket

Paul and Shark’s Re-goose down filling offers a sustainable option with a subtle approach to padding, and the same benefits as a traditionally sourced down filling. The Typhoon technical fabric is resistant to both wind and rain, and there is a dedicated internal pocket to keep your phone safe.

Moorer - Black 'Zayn' Down-Filled Padded Coat

MooRER’s Zayn coat offers a refined silhouette that won’t be out of place in the office. Contrast inner trims will help you stand out, and MooRER’s usual attention to detail has added subtle touches which will, as usual, delight.

Moorer - Dark Blue 'Petrini' Mid Length Padded Coat

Made from gaberdine, this is perhaps the most understated of our padded coat options. Again crafted to an exquisite standard by MooRER, it’s a superb choice for those looking for maximum function combined with true style.

Robert Old - Dorset Green Diamond Quilt Overcoat Crafted with a Loro Piana Rain System Wool & Cashmere Fabric

Our own Dorset Green overcoat features a Loro Piana rain system fabric that adds water resistance without compromising on fabric choice. It’s a lighter choice than a fully padded jacket, but with a wool and cashmere construction, you’ll retain heat almost as well.

Moorer - Beige 'Alarick' Down-filled Bomber Jacket

For snowier climes and alpine holidays, we suggest the Alaric. With a classic quilted design and shearling collar, it’s truly a pinnacle of warmth and comfort.

The finishing touch

Your coat is a substantial part of the first impression you create, along with being an essential part of every day - it has to work harder than almost any other piece of clothing. That makes investing in the right piece truly important.
