Stetson - When brand name, plus history, equals style

Stetson - When brand name, plus history, equals style

Few accessories say more about a man than his choice of hat - and few hatmakers boast the pedigree of Stetson. With a legacy stretching back to 1865, Stetson is the original name in American headwear. When combined with the flat cap, a hat with a storied history of its own, the result is pure style.

We’re proud to offer a handpicked collection of Stetson hats that pay homage to the rich heritage of both the brand and the style - but updated for the modern gentleman.

Origins of the flat cap

The flat cap's roots can be traced back to 14th-century Northern England, where woollen caps were commonly worn by working men for warmth and protection. But its big break came in 1571, when an Act of Parliament under Queen Elizabeth I (aimed at boosting the British wool trade) mandated that all non-noble men over six years old must wear a wool cap on Sundays and holidays, except when travelling.

Failure to comply carried a fine of three farthings (a small, but meaningful, sum at the time). While the law was repealed in the 1590s, the style stuck - particularly among labourers and tradesmen. The cap became synonymous with the British working class for the next few centuries.

By the 19th century, flat caps were part of the standard uniform for British workers, from miners and steelworkers in the North to chimney sweeps in London. It was practical: warm, tough, and easy to make.

But by the Edwardian period, the flat cap began to see more widespread usage. Gentlemen wore them for shooting parties and driving, as a more casual alternative to the bowler or top hat.

Meanwhile, across the pond

The flat cap also became popular in the United States, especially among immigrants from Ireland, Scotland, and Italy. It was called a newsboy cap there, owing to its association with young newspaper sellers - although strictly speaking, that name is sometimes reserved for the rounder, more baggy version with a button on top.

By the 1920s, the cap was common in both American and British urban environments - making it the perfect addition to the expanding range of hats produced by Stetson.

The Stetson brand

Founded by John B. Stetson in the wake of the American Civil War, Stetson was famously worn across the Old West. The "Boss of the Plains" was the first of its kind: a wide-brimmed felt hat built to withstand the rigours of life on the plains. That ethos of durability and design excellence still informs every Stetson hat made today.
