Corduroy - our picks for the season

Corduroy - our picks for the season

Geposted von Robert Old am

Corduroy is a great fabric choice for autumn - there’s something very comforting about its tactile nature, and it looks particularly striking in the autumnal palette of rich browns and oranges. Rich in texture and steeped in heritage, it’s a material that balances warmth, versatility, and unmistakable depth of character.

A Heritage Reimagined

Corduroy’s story begins in the workshops of Manchester’s textile mills and the tailoring houses of France. Derived from “corde du roi”, meaning “the cord of the king”, it was originally woven for outdoor wear, valued for its durability and rugged appearance. Over time, it has become synonymous with creative and academic circles, finding favour with writers, artists, and scholars who appreciate its distinctive look and comfortable construction.

Today, corduroy’s appeal has evolved through modern tailoring techniques and fabrics, which have refined the once-sturdy cloth into something altogether more elegant. Softer cottons, a touch of stretch, and finer wales (the vertical ridges that define the fabric) bring comfort and sophistication to contemporary styles, whether in trousers, jackets, or overshirts.

The Texture of the Season

Corduroy’s hallmark is its texture: a tactile surface that catches the light and adds visual depth to any outfit. Its ridges lend a charm to weekend wear, while its structure gives real substance to tailored pieces. As with denim, it works best solo, rather than wearing several pieces simultaneously.

Its textural quality also makes it the perfect seasonal counterpart to autumn’s other tactile fabrics. Think suede loafers, merino knitwear, or a cashmere scarf or trousers – all enhanced by corduroy’s plush finish. It’s a fabric that’s unmistakably of the season.

Why we recommend corduroy

Corduroy’s enduring appeal lies in its character. It softens with age, develops a patina unique to each garment, and offers a combination of comfort and polish. It’s as well suited to a country weekend as it is to a smart-casual dinner - a fabric that, season after season, will add both character and texture to your ensemble.
